UPDATE: Here’s a Vine of a shackled Del Mastro waddling off to prison.
Former Conservative MP Dean Del Mastro is going to prison. Like, an actual, real jail with bars and everything. If this is not a a stark reflection on just how awful the federal conservatives are, then, well, I don’t know what else to tell you.
Over the last several years, Steve Harper has tried his hardest to change the nature of our country. One where plutocrats make decisions, only white baby boomers vote and where people are taught to fear anyone who doesn’t look exactly like them.
Del Mastro joins a bunch of other Harper loyalists who have been convicted of actual crimes. Not only should this be an informal disqualification of his trustworthiness and honesty, it should damn-near solidify his party’s ungraceful exit from power next election. But I’m not sure it’s that inevitable.
In America, there are men running for goddamn president who are under actual indictment (and whose loyalists have also been convicted of actual crimes). No one seems to bat an eye. This is Harper’s goal: gerrymander and legislate to the point where no matter how much awful shit you do, you still control the system by which people elect you. It’s a sad pantomime of a man afraid that he is losing power.
Here’s to a few months of conservative desperation, followed by a swift and convincing turnout from Canadians who are tired of Harper’s divisiveness, arrogance and contempt.
