Don’t Believe the Hype

The online cesspool that is the federal Conservatives Facebook page recently posted this image. It’s like your ignorant, paranoid uncle suddenly became social media manager for the federal government. The comments from this post are just as bad — mostly scared, uneducated people calling for open carry laws. Hey, we should be able to protect ourselves! We all shop in malls! Fuck you Harper, and everyone who stands behind this fearmongering, race-baiting wedge politics.

The argument isn’t whether terrorist threats exist (they always do). Many, many, many people fear Bill C-51 ensnare a lot of Canadians with legitimate reasons for protest and dissent with the blanket “terrorism in general” language. So, what, people protesting the building of a pipeline can be swept up by CSIS under the guise of supporting “terrorism in general”? Almost every legal scholar who have voiced their opinion on C-51 agree the language in this bill is too broad.

All this on top of the fact that Harper and his minions are railroading this bill through Parliament, limiting debate and basically calling anyone who opposes this bill conspiracy theorists. How can you be against giving CSIS more power to stop terrorism? Reminds me of Vic Toews saying, “you’re either with us or you’re with the child molesters”.

Instead of being a coward, Harper should allow for serious debate (like the Liberal government did after 9/11). Harper is a fearmonger, a warmonger and knows he doesn’t have the popular vote. So he riles up his ignorant base with insane wedge issues and black/white rhetoric in a VERY gray area.
