After meeting with the pig-torturing, straight-shooting Governor of New Joisey, Jim Prentice scheduled an impromptu and rare (by PC standards) press conference to say what many hoped for: Bill 10 is, at least, on hold.

What I find hilarious is that the crux of Prentice puttin’ on the brakes is he thinks the bill is too divisive. In his words:

“At present there clearly is no consensus in Alberta on either the constitutionality or the wisdom of the provincial government mandating gay-straight alliances in schools,” Prentice said. “The issue was polarizing to begin with, and has become evermore so over the past several days.”

Well no shit. When you transparently placate fundamentals at the (dangerous) expense of the physical and mental well-being of LGBQT Albertans, yeah, most people will be upset.

Alberta is NOT a province that encourages bigotry, which is what this bill would probably do. We know how good religious groups are at digging their heels into their faith, facts/popular opinion/decent society be damned. The rights of teenagers to not risk depression and suicide trumps the rights of religious parents from making sure their kids remain as ignorant as they are.

Most people see this legislation as a good thing; however I suspect the PCs will try to table essentially-the-same legislation to appease certain groups.
