Greg Saunier from Deerhoof recently said of Rhode Island art sludge duo Lightning Bolt that (at least to him), they sounded almost completely primal, visceral and pure: their sound isn’t contrived; it’s completely new and neanderthalic. A sound forged from rocks and sticks into something completely unique and honest. I…would agree.
For me, Lightning Bolt opened my ears to the other world of music. This other world rarely existed in large record store chains, or on the radio or on television. You had to scour the (relatively new) Internet, talk to people and search to satisfy your curiousity. Their 2003 record Wonderful Rainbow was exactly that…wonderful.
So, thanks Lightning Bolt. Here’s to another 20 goddamn years.
